The baritone Roman Janál is one of the top Czech opera soloists. Having graduated from the Pilsen Conservatory in violin, he studied at the vocal department of the Music Academy in Sofia, graduating in 1990. During his studies he appeared as a guest at the State Opera in Sofia. Later he sang in Banská Bystrica and at the Pilsen Opera and appeared as a soloist at the State Opera in Prague in 1995. In 1997 he joined the National Theatre Opera where he has performed many parts of the Czech and international repertoire, such as Gregorio in Romeo and Juliette, Figaro in the Barber of Seville, Escamillo in Carmen, Polux in the baroque tragedy lyrique Castor et Polux, Alexander in the comic one-act opera by Martinů Twice Alexander and the role of Don Giovanni. Janál´s repertoire includes also Silvio in Pagliacci, Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro, Germont in La Traviata, Vladislav in Dalibor and many others. As a member of the National Theatre he has toured Japan, Hong Kong, France, Germany, etc. Roman Janál often performs at local and international festivals, collaborates with various music ensembles at home and abroad, and has recorded a great number of CDs of opera arias and song cycles. In 1995 he won the Antonín Dvořák International Singing Competition in Karlovy Vary. Since 1995 he has been teaching singing at the Prague Conservatory. Roman Janál was awarded the Thalia Award in 1999 for the part of Polux in Rameau´s opera Castor and Polux at the National Theatre.
